What type of joint would you use for a interchangeable garden tool?
d030-054.jpg

For my resistant materials second paper on Monday the theme is "Garden Hand Tools".

We need to know about Single and interchangeable tools and i was wondering what you would use on the tool to make it interchangeable so that the head of the tool could be changed into about 3 tools e.g. a trowel, small fork, small rake.

So, what type of joining (fabricating) would you use?

Any information you have on garden hand tools would be useful as well please.

Thanks :)
How would you do the threaded or pinned connection?

Threads wear out too easy I think i'd go with the pin connection like vacuum cleaners use. it is a spring loaded pin that can be depressed to slide of one head to change it to another. More than one of the pins can be used for more strength. Naturally the handle would have to be hollow, therefore metal.

Is it possible to adjust the power of blowing/suction on a garden tool ?
Axe Awaiting

I have a combo tool. It blows the dirt, leaves etc. to create a pile with certain attachment. With a different attachments it sucks the pile of dry leaves into the bag attached that could be emptied in a waste can. Lately, it blows so hard (even after turtle/hare adjustment), that it really blows out mulch(naturally hardened over 18 months) from the flowerbed along with the dry leaves. On the other hand, its suction has gotten so weak, that the nozzle has to be held steady within an inch of the surface (say driveway, steps), to pickup the dry leaves.
I would like to increase the suction power, so I can walk around sweeping the area. At the same time, I would like to reduce the blowing power, so I can slowly move the dry leaves in a nice pile in a corner.
Thanks in advance.

the only way to do that is to regulate the throttle or the air intake hope this helps

what garden tool is the best to use on getting rid of tree stumps, and wee ds are growing up the wall, What to?
Stone wall

what tool works best on that?

A pick, shovel, and chainsaw or axe/hatchet.In years gone by,if the stumps are very big one would drill as many holes as possible as big around and deep as possible straight down into stump.Next kerosene,or any other type oily type fuel would be poured in and allowed to soak in over time (a day or so) and even repeated. Then fire was set.Repeat as necessary.

my teacher gave me a sheet all about garden hand tools so our class could prepare for the exam on monday and it said on it that most interchangeable hand tools can be released and changed with just a simple push of a button. This means that many different heads and handles can be used according to what you need to do.

He also gave us a list of materials usually used for garden hand tools, these were stainless steel, high carbon steel, ash (hardwood), polypropylene, pressed steel and forged manganese steel.

A useful website with information on their own garden hand tools is www.bulldoghandtools.co.uk
this website also has a video to show how the tools are made

I hope this helps and good luck in the exam tomorrow!

  • Can#39;t Find the Perfect Garden Tool? Make Your Own - Go Green ...

The garden tools in a hardware store are mass-market items. The shapes and sizes available are limited in order to minimize costs and maximize profits—ease of use is not the goal. Years ago when farm and garden tools were used by professionals as well as by amateurs, the choices were far broader and tool designs were based on efficient use rather than marketing. A look through old tool catalogs or the collection in a historical museum will give you some idea. Nuances abounded. Shovel catalogs offered all conceivable blade sizes, shapes, and angles. Regional peculiarities were acknowledged. I have an old tool book with pictures of dozens of English hedging knives (billhooks). Each slight variation in design is named after the town or county where it evolved. They were the distillation of centuries of local experience in cutting the different varieties of hedge plants common to different climates and different soils.

This functional diversity still exists on small farms in Europe. For example, over many years I have taken photos of different styles of wheelbarrow. Whether single or double wheeled, wide or narrow, decked or open, there was no single perfect design, but rather many aspirations to perfection. In addition, the farmers had added cuts or bends or welds to the standard models to fit them even more precisely to their needs. It was like looking at an author’s drafts or an artist’s sketches—a study in the creation and evolution of an idea.
