What are the essential tools for a beginning gardener?
Living the American dream...

I have a friend who is wanting to start gardening in her bare backyard. Her birthday is coming up and I want to put together a little package of essential gardening tools. I don't know anything about gardening myself, so please help!

I am a long time gardener, and I own a variety of tools, each does a specific job. If your friend is going to plant roses or shrubs, a pair of hand pruners would be welcome (about $12).

A shovel is great (I only use short handled ones, I like that type best). $8 - $15

Small tools like a trowel and a hand hoe are nice (I never use a big hoe,it's too much work). $5 - 10

And gloves. Nice, leather gloves, the thinner the better ($10).

A metal rake, the kind for moving soil or small rocks as opposed to the floppy leaf rake. I love to use a heavy rake to smooth out planting beds. $8 - 12

A good book on gardening, preferably organic gardening would be the best gift of all. $20

There are some excellent gardening forums in cyber land too, with people who have all sorts of know how.

If you shop around, you might find very cheap garden tools as stores tend to try to get rid of all that stuff by the end of summer.

I can garden anywhere with gloves, a shovel, a rake and a trowel. I can only prune things if I have snips, so those are the basics, for me (been gardening a long, long time).

What to get my brother-in-law a MASTER GARDENER for his birthday?
Gardening Tools

He has been a Master Gardener almost 20 years. He has every garden book ever written and every garden tool ever made. The gift must be related to gardening because anything else won't be noticed. I live with him & my sister (also a Master Gardener) and I owe them both a lot. It needs to be special, personal & garden related. Oh ya, no plants. Big rule around here, no incoming foliage of any kind. He hasn't the time to care for what he has now. A real jungle around here. A trip to a fancy garden in Pango Pango is out as my budget just maxed out at $200.00. No books, no tools, no plants. Oy? What to get the man who has everything, garden related, $200.00 budget. HELP!

Find a garden showplace within driving distance that is featuring their garden in bloom.Take them both. When you call about the place fot time, etc. Ask if you can bring a nice food basket, cardtable, cloth, wine, etc. Have a nice time walking around and then eating while viewing the beautiful flowers. Ask if there will be someone there who will answer questions or give tours. Your expenses will be gas, fee or donation into the garden, a nice basket lunch-not sandwiches and maybe you can find a special bulb or tool there, that you bro-in-law seems interested in that you can buy.You will be sharing his passion of gardening and giving him a great gift. It is nice to see that someone cares and respects his family! Have fun!

When my landscaper was installing my sod he used a tool to level out the soil. What's the name of it?
Potting Shed - Lost Gardens of Heligan

My lawn is thrashed after my gardener mowed it on a rainy day and there are indentations of the mower trail in my soil, the soil is no longer leveled. I recall my landscaper using a non-electric tool that looked like a metal barrel filled with water with handles (like a mower) to flatten the soil. What's the name of the tool?

it is called a roller. the water gives the barrel extra weight. pavers also use this device to tamp down or flatten blacktop

What's the going hourly rate for a gardener in Cornwall?
Digging in the garden

I am looking to relocate to Cornwall and take my small gardening business with me. I have heard that generally people are paid less and am very interested to find out the going rates. I am RHS trained and have my own tools.
Many Thanks
Ben

eOverall people in Cornwall do earn less than anywhere in the Country - which is a shame as we have the highest house prices! The going rates depend on matter's such as the season and location as you probably know being a professional gardner! There may not be so much call for gardeners in Cornwall currently as there are already loads already and a lot of people do the gardening themselves being a rural area!

mom-avid gardener, birthday coming up, loves sunflowers-present ideas?
Help for the gardener

my mom is turning 58 this year next month---her favorite flower is Sunflowers and she is an AVID gardener...what can I get her?
I was thinking maybe a sunflower set of garden stuff-like garden gloves with sunflowers on them, a flower pot with sunflowers on them, some stuff like that...where can I get gardening tools with sunflowers on them...or really any nice sunflower gift?
I hate to say this, but since I got a new place I'm on a budget and can not spend more than $50-$75 this year (I wish I had more to work with...)
I'm open to ideas and suggestions-any help greatly appreciated
thanks in advance!

you can always try Home Depot, Lowes or any other hardware store that also has a gardening department.

Or you could look up your local greenhouses and buy stuff from there. Where I live, there is a local Amish farmer's market that sells a lot of gardening stuff & plants.

Good luck with finding your mom a present. :)

Efficiency is the heart of sustainable gardening—you want to use resources sparingly and get the best return for whatever you invest. Including yourself.

That’s something most gardeners seem to forget when they shop for tools. Tools are the means by which you translate your ideas and energy into reality. A really good tool, one that also fits you, maximizes your effectiveness. A poorly crafted tool or one that is inappropriate for you or the task makes the job much harder than it has to be and guarantees poor results.

Actually, to describe the way in which most gardeners acquire tools as shopping is an exaggeration. Most go to the garden center or a big-box store and take whatever happens to be sitting on the shelf.

Would you buy a suit or a pair of shoes without trying them on? Yet when was the last time you tried on a tool before you bought it?

And if you decided to bake a cake, you wouldn’t use a cast iron skillet just because that was the first pan that came to hand. But that, time and again, is what I see other gardeners doing when they work their plots. They prune a tree with an old carpenter’s saw or turn the soil in a bed with a contractor’s shovel.
