For my resistant materials second paper on Monday the theme is "Garden Hand Tools".
We need to know about Single and interchangeable tools and i was wondering what you would use on the tool to make it interchangeable so that the head of the tool could be changed into about 3 tools e.g. a trowel, small fork, small rake.
So, what type of joining (fabricating) would you use?
Any information you have on garden hand tools would be useful as well please.
Thanks :)
How would you do the threaded or pinned connection?
Threads wear out too easy I think i'd go with the pin connection like vacuum cleaners use. it is a spring loaded pin that can be depressed to slide of one head to change it to another. More than one of the pins can be used for more strength. Naturally the handle would have to be hollow, therefore metal.

This was an unusual looking tool with a claw and had a sharp side to cut also. It was $15.00. I have tried calling the plant sale and they don't remember the name and I have done a internet search with no luck.
I like my hori hori, it's useful for digging, sawing and cutting. Works great for planting bulbs. Here a link to show you: http://www.gardenshoponline.com/catalog/ product_info.php?products_id=112

my teacher gave me a sheet all about garden hand tools so our class could prepare for the exam on monday and it said on it that most interchangeable hand tools can be released and changed with just a simple push of a button. This means that many different heads and handles can be used according to what you need to do.
He also gave us a list of materials usually used for garden hand tools, these were stainless steel, high carbon steel, ash (hardwood), polypropylene, pressed steel and forged manganese steel.
A useful website with information on their own garden hand tools is www.bulldoghandtools.co.uk
this website also has a video to show how the tools are made
I hope this helps and good luck in the exam tomorrow!
I had a small veggie garden last year, so this wasn't a problem as I used some small tools I purchased myself. This year, I plan to go pro, and came upon some old tools (spade, pitchfork, rake, etc) that were here from the previous owner of my house. Problem is, they're rusty. Can I use them safely, or should I scrap them and buy all new stuff?
PS: I will be composting, too.
You will be fine with the tools that you have. One trick is to buy a pale and fill it with playbox sand, mix in some oil and put your tools into the sand. This will prevent rust and will not hurt your garden or compost. Good luck.

The big window came from an old lodge up here that was being remodeled some decades ago and fitted with new windows. I got several of them free of charge, just for hauling 'em away, and they've been used here over the years as tomato hot-houses and even a temporary home for baby chicks once. I have at least two more of these I'm saving for a garden potting-shed.
We are a car-free retired couple living in a small 950 sq ft mountain cabin on less than 1/4 acre at 6,750 ft elevation. The native plant habitat we established on the property now exceeds 100 species and we grow organic vegetables on a small portion of the yard. In our continuing efforts toward simple, sustainable and rewarding lives we bid our last car "Good Riddance" in January of 1997. Earth Home Garden represents what we love in life, our bountiful planet EARTH and all her natural diversity, our cozy little cabin HOME and the family it has sheltered for 29 years, and the GARDEN around us which nurtures so many native creatures and helps feed us as well.
