Gardening gift basket?

Hi, I want to make a gardening gift basket for my mother in law for her birthday. What are some practical things I can put into the planter. I am setting everything up in a rustic wheel barrel planter I purchased. I also wanted to add some extra things...and I thought of a nail brush and nice hand cream any other extras come to mind that I should add? Thanks a lot.

P.S. I don't want to include seed packets or bulbs, since she already has most of that stuff

Nice gloves are always a plus and any good, sturdy hand tools. Good quality pruners are hard to come by, she would probably appreciate that. If you're in the city, include a couple bags of composted manure. Try to find some plants she may not have. I don't know your zone, but prickly pear are a fun cactus that are hardy in zone 5+ and maybe even zone 4. Agave is another underused succulent. Tons of varieties - really cool.

How about a wreath or sign she can post on her door - "In the Garden". Garden catalogs are always fun too. Tons available , most in full color. A nice sun hat, sunscreen, lip balm w/sunscreen are also nice gifts. Ohhh, I have a garden tote bag that I absolutely love! You can store your tools or whatever inside and there is pockets all around the outside. I think it's waterproof too. Special hose nozzles are a good gift, a trellis, decorative outdoor pots, a fountain. Do a search on the internet, I found instructions to make a "miniatiure potted pond", I have it in a word file if you'd like to email me at sound4hound@yahoo.com Good Luck!

Ideas for gift baskets at a preschool auction event?

I need some ideas for suggestions for the following types of gift baskets.
1) "Manicure and Pedicure" themed gift basket.
2) "Children's Outdoor Fun" themed gift basket.
3) "Children's Favorite Books" themed gift basket.
4) "Campers Backpack" themed gift basket.
5) "Movie Night" themed gift basket.
6) "Bath Time" themed gift basket.
7) "Children's Art Supplies" themed gift basket.
8) "Bug Collecting and Gardening" themed gift basket.

These themed baskets are for a preschools auction and we are giving parents a few suggestions for their donations. Each class has it's own themed basket. The ages of our schoolers are from 18 months to 4 years. I have come up with quite a bit on my own but feel I may be missing something. I am looking for some unique ideas.
Thanks for every-ones help

gift basket themes?

A few friends and I are hosting a baby shower for a a good friend. There are 70 people coming and we decided that prizes for the games would be themed gift baskets.

Here is what we have so far...

Car Wash
Steelers (we live in PGH)
gardening
games night
date night at home (movie rentals, popcorn, etc)
date night out (restaurant gift cards, movie theater cards, etc)

Any other ideas? These baskets will be for women of all different ages 18-75)

What a baby shower!!! Those are great gift basket ideas but still a lot of money for a game prize. Money that could go for the mommy to be and baby.

I would keep it simple. Small baskets with yummy goodies, or lotions.

Also you can think about having every one sign up to bring the new parents over a meal. Lunch and Dinner sign up. They just drop it off, no need to come in and chat. Fast easy meals that you can just pop in the over and then throw away the pan.

have fun

gardening question?

i got some seeds in a gift basket and i wasnt sure what somthing ment but any ways it said u were suppose to sow the seeds in 1/4 to 1/2 deep in fine soil indoors in a pot.
what dose sow mean?

Get some "potting" soil at Wal-Mart. That is considered fine soil. Put it in your pot. Poke a finger into the soil about 1/2 inch deep. Drop a seed into that. Fill in the hole with dirt. You have just sewn a seed!

Water it with a sprinkling can--the type with little holes poked in the spout so it will imitate rain. That will be gentle enough so that you don't drown the seed or wash it away.

Put the pot in a warm, sunny window and water it when the surface is dry--every couple of days until it sprouts. Then you don't have to water so frequently. Also, make sure you don't water it too much so that it stays soggy, that will make the seed rot.

It's really not too tricky. Plant several seeds so that if some don't make it others will.

Soon you will have flowers--or herbs.

Good Luck!

  • What Are Gift Baskets For

One might ponder on why gift baskets are such popular gifts nowadays. You can immediately see what exactly you are getting, which is totally different from the usual process of getting a present – all the excitement and the thrill of tearing open the wrapping papers and then only knowing what you are getting, so what could be so nice about getting gift baskets? As the entire gift items in a gift basket can be seen, there’s just not much to say even though gift baskets are usually gorgeously packaged.

In the past, baskets were woven using suitable resources that could be obtained conveniently. These baskets were used to collect fruits and other food, and hunters used them to store their catch of the day. This could very well be the reason why baskets are used to present gifts nowadays, as they had once been used to present natural gifts such as fruit, flowers and other types of food that can easily spoil.

The Biblical tale of discovering three-month old baby Moses in a basket made of bulrushes among the tall grass by the riverbank was said to be the other version of how it all started. This could very well explain the beginning of the baby gift baskets ideas, followed by the rise of different types of gift baskets.
